UFC News

  1. UFC is bringing first-class mixed martial arts back to California, in the form of Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. On October 24th, enthusiasts will be treated to a fight between two of the most enterprising fighters The Octagon has known.

Brazil born Machida is looking to safeguard his UFC heavyweight title against his fellow countryman Rua. Machida currently holds a immaculate 15-0 record, and has been described as “ A man that remains a mystery to every opponent he’s faced in his mixed martial arts career”. It’s fair to say the 31-year-old has dominated the UFC light heavyweight division. His knockout of undefeated Rashad Evans not only procured him the UFC light heavyweight belt, but recognized Machida as an worldwide marvel. With a karate and Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt to his name, he remains one of the hardest targets to hit in the Octagon. However, Machida by no means has a easy road ahead.

UFC President Dana White declared that although “The Dragon” may seem unbeatable - “Rua not only has the tools to beat any 205-pounder in the world.....his confidence is sky-high. This has the potential to be one of the greatest light heavyweight title fights ever.”

A fighter who has stood against the best in the world in his career, Rua has now become illustrious in the UFC. “I feel very happy about fighting for the UFC belt” stated Rua, who has already accumulated an impressive 18-3 professional record. “It’s a huge opportunity in my career and in my life” With a TKO victory over Mark Coleman - who stands in the UFC Hall of Fame - at UFC 93 and another TKO over yet another member of the Hall of Fame, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell who he dispersed with in the first round, “Shogun” has situated himself as the No.1 competitor for the title.

Despite his recent success however, some have been skeptical, and aren't convinced on the abilities of Rua, and pessimists say his blaze of glory is short lived. After all, he is squaring up to a contender who, in the short space of three fights, went from shaky to savage.

Machida seems more think of Rua more formidably than some of his critics “The fact that I get to fight someone as respected as Shogun is an honor.....I know how tough my fellow Brazilians are. I’m training extremely hard”

Machida will be intent on firmly ending the rotating of the title which, since May 2007 has changed hands a overall four times.

No question, however that Rua will be looking to making it five...

  2. Randy Couture, a fighting legend in his own right, who stands in the UFC Hall of Fame, has re-signed with the UFC.

His new contract overwrites the single fight he had remaining on his old deal, so it's with a clean slate and a fresh mindset that Couture embarks on his next fights.

Randy, 46, Nicknamed 'The Natural', shows no signs of slowing down, recently signing the 28 month/six fight deal with the UFC.

Having himself just suffered two straight losses, the new contract holds extra significance, as Couture needs to utilise his time firmly to cement himself in UFC history, and force himself back into the limelight of which he has become accustomed to. With a fighting style based essentially around wrestling, and an astonishing ability to annihilate his adversary in the clinch, Couture has been described as the 'ultimate' fighter.

However, The Natural is not without his share of worthy opponents.

Presuming he remains in the Heavyweight division, the likelihood is that he would be matched up against the likes of Antoni Hardonk, Brandon Vera, Frank Mir, Shane Carwin and Gabriel Gonzaga amongst others - with each potential pairing holding a different outcome for the acclaimed fighter.

Gonzaga, for example is a man with something to prove after losing to both Fabrico Werdum and Couture himself in succession. And with Couture successfully defending the heavyweight title against Gonzaga in UFC 74, neither will be going down without difficulty, Gonzaga being described as being on a 'comeback trail'.

Whatever pairings are subsequent, it promises to be intriguing. A drop down to the Light Heavyweight division is also possible, as it holds scarce rematches and an abundance of fresh challenges, and makes one superfight an even greater feasibility.

Even Todd Duffee, who is the UFCs rising Heavyweight talent, making his debut at UFC 102 in stupendous style, knocking Tim Hague out in a mere seven seconds, cannot be ruled out, and could be on a collision course with Coture.

Rich Franklin could also be a conceivable opponent at 205, having overcome all but Anderson Silva at 185.

There are no definates in Randy Coutures future however. He is one of the most unyielding competitors ever to step foot in the octagon and is always the showman, win or lose. Whatever the outcome, 'The Natural' will end his proffesional career where it began in 1997. The Octagon.

  3. The conflict between UFC president Dana White and Floyd Mayweather Jr rages on, with each party locking horns, as they both exasperate the issue with interviews and statements lashing out at the other party.

The two events will be shown on the same day, via pay per view on Saturday, September 19.

Following another Floyd Mayweather Jr jab at the sport of mixed martial arts, in which Mayweather described MMA as being for "beer drinkers" whereas, he argues, it "takes true skill to be in the sport of boxing" UFC president Dana White went off again in his UFC Video Blog on YouTube. He retorted by saying "No-body asked for this flight with Mayweather and what's his name? No-one in this room even knows who Floyds fighting" and "But that's my point, no-one gives a shit. Boxing is trying to sell you a fight that no-one cares about". He pointed out that the UFC is so popular due to its value for money, illustrating that for $10 less than the Mayweather fight, you could see five UFC fights. The last shot was fired when White compared watching a Mayweather fight with "Dancing with the stars" as all he does is 'dance around' and lay on the ropes and not fight.

This argument conveying UFC as a more spirited and more tenacious type of fighting was compared by Mayweather to animals fighting.

The argument over value for money advances, with Dana White maintaining that boxing is all but robbing its fans. Mayweathers comments on money did nothing to quash these accusations, saying "Just look for the biggest mansion and the prettiest Roll Royce and that's me.

However numbers speak louder than words, and Dana White hopes he has discouraged fans from tuning in to Mayweathers fight this Saturday, opting for UFC instead. In the continuous battle between the two sports, who will come out on top?

  4. The December showdown between Rampage and Rashad is now off.

In a recent interview, Rashad talked of his disappointment that the most hyped rivalry in history would not be settled in the octagon until at least 2010.

Rampage has recently been confirm as the new Mr T, although widely accepted as a great opportunity, both Rashad and UFC President Dana White have aired their concerns that fighters should stick to what they do best.

Where this leave Rampage in the eyes of the UFC and MMA fans only time will tell, I for one was really looking forward to seeing a great fight and an end to their trash talking.

The cancelled main event leave Dana with a new problem, who the hell will be the main event fighters for the rest of the year?

  5. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira Beats Couture in a classic war, Light heavyweight fighter Keith Jardine lost by brutal KO in the hands of Brazilian Thiago Silva. Read full coverage on UFC Betting Odds .com

  6. Ed Herman is coming off a win against David Loiseau at UFC 97 in April, that win probably kept Herman in the UFC and a tough fight against undefeated Aaron Simpson at UFC 102 will keep the pressure on Ed.

Despite spending most of his life fighting, Ed now says he has an added motivation, his family. Ed and his girlfriend had twins in January, the birth of his children has made the fight to stay in the UFC even greater. Betting David Loiseau but an end to a 2 fight losing streak which would have surely put an end to his UFC contract, a contract which came off the back of an appearance on The Ultimate Fighter show.

Aaron Simpson will offer Herman a good challenge but a win could go some way to shaking up the UFC middleweight division since no one else seems to offer a decent challenge to current title holder Anderson Silva.

Herman is -135 to beat Simpson so at least the bookies are with him. Stay tuned for more UFC 102 news, videos, build up, betting news and results.

  8. Silva out of UFC 105 fight with Bisping

Wanderlei Silva has now been ruled out of the fight with Michael Bisping in Manchester UK after having having facial surgery to deal with old scar tissue. This puts the UFC in a difficult position since they need Bisping on the card in his home town, but he needs to have a good opponent to make it a draw for the crowd.

Bisping will be keen to come back with strong fight after his ground shaking knock out loss to Dan Henderson. Denis Kang has been mentioned but that would just feed into the hands of those who feel Bisping has been wrapped in cotton wool.

Bisping needs a Rousimar Palhares or Demian Maia. Both fighters offer a tough challenge and would certainly make a great fight.

Keep checking back for news on the next fight as and when it comes in.
